Below: Next up - Xanten, the northernmost outpost of the Roman empire in what is now Germany. Romans established a base here in 12 BC and the town was founded by emperor Traianus in AD 98. It was the largest Roman outpost after Cologne. Situated along the Rhine it housed up to 40,000 soldiers.
